FIRST AND
LASTING IMPRESSIONS
If you bought a Sandwich Fair pin made during the last 33
years, you own a Jackie Dannewitz design. You may also own
one of her designs if you bought a mug or sweatshirt at the
gazebo. Her logos are on Sandwich Fair posters, 昀氀yers, and
琀椀ckets. Have a le琀琀er cancelled at the U.S. Postal Service sta琀椀on at the fair and the recipient will get a copy of her work.
Jackie volunteered to work in the gazebo in the early 1990s
and started designing the pins in 1993. The pin for next year
will be designed shortly a昀琀er this year’s fair ends. Jackie says
it’s hard to come up with fresh ideas a昀琀er so many years. But
she credits a good commi琀琀ee that brainstorms themes.
“And then I sort of incorporate that into the posters that we
put out and the brochures, the 琀椀ckets, the 昀氀yers. Just pre琀琀y
much all the print that we do.”
She uses a computer now. That wasn’t common when she
started.
“I would hand draw everything, add the type, paste it up and
so forth.”
Although Jackie describes herself as not a great ar琀椀st by any
stretch, the Leland High School graduate went into business
doing art.
“When I was in high school, I was always doing posters for
basketball games and school events and prom and homecoming or whatever, and then I kind of started my own li琀琀le business of graphic design.”
Jackie likes when people who don’t know her like what they
see in the pins.
“We have collectors that would probably buy it whether
they liked it or not. But it makes me feel good and kind of
smile to know that they like my artwork.”
The 2026 pin was designed by local ar琀椀st Jackie Dannewitz. This
one-of-a-kind design features a “fairscape” featuring buildings on
the fairgrounds. Accents with stars and patrio琀椀c red, white and
blue were added to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary.
