Chances are, if
you meet someone at the fair
who can’t tell
a story about
their parents or grandparents going or being involved
with it somehow, that person
didn’t grow up around here.
But chances are, as long as
their children and grandchildren live in the area, the fair
will be part of their lives. The
Sandwich Fair is undeniably
part of the area’s culture.
Talks with people whose
families have been involved
for generations make it clear.
Children who help their parents with the fair usually
pass the experience on to
the generation after them.
Sometimes, it takes a
while. Doug Brandow started entering the fair’s cooking contests just two years
ago. His mother won the
Grand Champion Cook title
in 1950 when Doug was 昀椀ve
years old. His grandmother
won third place that year.
He, his brothers, and their
father harvested vegetables
from the family garden. “We
showed a lot of vegetables in
the junior fair and the senior
fair and the horticulture area
at the fair.” Doug’s mom and
sister cooked. His children

After many years of entering sometimes 40 or more
cross stitch and 昀椀ne embroidery pieces and winning, Jan
isn’t sure about the craft’s
future. Younger people just
don’t seem interested. With
a laugh she says, “I could
put a sign up, ‘Welcome to
older people,’ because those
are the people that will come
and look at your things.”
