Northern Illinois farm families closed out a resilient 2025 season that reaffirmed the state’s
standing as an agricultural powerhouse. Illinois once again ranked as the nation’s #1 soybean
producer, harvesting more than 639 million bushels from 10.23 million acres at an average
of 62.5 bushels per acre. Corn told an even bigger story at 2.35 billion bushels on 11 million
acres, it was the largest corn crop in Illinois history, averaging 214 bushels per acre, well above
the U.S. average of 186.5. Northern fields led the way, with DeKalb County corn averaging
244.4 bushels per acre, 6th in the nation. A warm, dry spring let northern growers’ plant early,
roughly half of both crops were in the ground by May 11 and strong June and July weather built
deep roots and full canopies that carried the crop through a dry autumn. With about 96% of
the state’s roughly 70,000 farms family-owned and operated, these numbers reflect the grit,
precision, and multigenerational teamwork that define farming across Northern Illinois.
