MOO-VIN’ AND GROOVIN’
INTO AN ALL NEW YEAR!
The inaugural Shake Up Shuffle last year
drew so many runners and walkers the organizers ran out of race bibs and finishers’
medals. Participants proudly collect those
mementos. Organizer Jenna Johnson says
not having enough for all 851 created an
administrative challenge. She adjusted
registration this year to make sure there
are enough.
says, “It was really difficult on the finish
line to determine who got a medal, who
didn’t.” So this year, guaranteed registration ended July 28. That was the T-shirt
order deadline. Runners and walkers who
didn’t mind not getting a shirt could still
enter—for a while.
registration ended.
“The only thing some runners might not
get will be a T-shirt because we have to order certain sizes by a certain time or a certain date. Everyone’s getting medals, everyone’s getting race bibs. And once we’re
sold out, we’re sold out.”
Johnson ordered more bibs and medals Another change will make things easier

Without a bib on each person, Johnson But when the bibs and medals ran out, race packets in advance.
“So, that’ll be helpful on our end to not
have 851 people checking in on Monday
morning, but also for runners to be able to
come to the race already in their shirt and
already have their race bibs with them.”
The runners won’t have to go back to their
cars to change shirts or put on bibs. It’ll
also spare them the worry of how early
they need to arrive to stand in line for their
packets.
Steven Hench, 36, from Geneva won last
year’s race in 17:23. The top three males
and top three females in the 5k were
awarded trophies last year. This year, the
top three males and females in the onemile component get awards also. And the
5k is expanding to have age group awards.
Proceeds from the race go to the DeKalb
County Community Fund. Those include
contributions from the many sponsors
shown on the race shirts. Registration
costs range from $15 to $45 depending on
whether someone is doing the 5k or onemile and the person’s age.
The theme you’ll see in the Shake Up Shuffle art this year is a cow holding a lemon
shake-up. Johnson says she’s “moo-vin’
and groovin’ into an all new year.”
