Still working the fair after retiring from the board
In a separate story, retired Sandwich Fair Board member Scott Breunig talks about directing parking for more than 40 years. His other work for the fair has been building. The gazebo, ticket booth,
and he estimates more than a hundred picnic tables are some of his work.
“I like to build things,” Breunig says. He also likes to think about how they should be built. He designed the gazebo, “With all the trim on it like they used to do in the 1800s,” to look like it’s as old
as the fair. He built for the fair during winter.
Breunig says he’s been going to the fair since he was a little kid. As a young man, he knew many of
the people involved. Veterinarian Dr. A. A. Legner, ready to retire from the fair board, asked Breunig
to serve.
“There’s only a couple other county fairs in the state that even compare.” First timers who’ve
been only to the many smaller summertime fairs should agree, “It’s a lot different than any fairs
you’ve been to.”
Guiding drivers to their parking spots is all-day work, so during those years Breunig didn’t get to
experience the fair as most people do. Having retired from the board, he can now. But he also
plans to help his son Dan, who’s on the board and helping with parking.
He may also tell the younger volunteers about the parking challenges of the 1980s when there was less parking and just one entrance. “Everybody used to come on 34 and cross in front of the fairgrounds. And they would back up to Plano sometimes. It was
kind of a mess. But we managed.”
